Associate Veterinarian / Exotics General Practitioner
Dr. Joseph Monroe joined the team in July 2025 as an Associate Veterinarian with a focus on exotics general practice. He has a strong passion for providing comprehensive medical care to reptiles, birds, and exotic mammals, and is dedicated to advancing education and access to specialized care for non-traditional pets.
Originally from Corinth, Maine, Dr. Monroe earned his Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Boston University in 2019 before graduating from the University of Prince Edward Island’s Atlantic Veterinary College in 2023. Prior to veterinary school, he completed over 5,000 volunteer hours working with humane societies and veterinary hospitals, demonstrating his long-standing commitment to animal care.
Dr. Monroe is an active member of the Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians, the Association of Avian Veterinarians, and the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians. He also serves as the Medical Director of Mr. Drew’s Exotic Animal Education Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focused on exotic animal education and outreach.
At home, Dr. Monroe cares for a lively group of pets, including two dogs — Winsten (a Boston Terrier/Frenchie mix) and Shirley (a tripod Chihuahua mix); two cats — Mildred and Opal; and Casper, an albino ringneck dove.
Dr. Monroe finds great fulfillment in helping both traditional and exotic pets live healthy, enriched lives while supporting the families who love them.
