YVCipedia CATS AND DOGS
A summary of our recommendations for puppies:
PUPPY EXAM / OFFICE VISIT Beginning at 6 to 8 weeks old, one every 3 to 4 weeks until 16 weeks or older. Our exams are comprehensive; included in each one, and of particular concern at YVC, is a DENTAL EVALUATION.
BEHAVIOR AND ACTIVITY Review at the time of each puppy exam.
DIET / NUTRITION Review at the time of each puppy exam.
HEARTWORM PREVENTIVE Begin monthly year-round preventive medication at 8 weeks or older. Heartgard Plus is our first choice; the are other excellent options.
TICK AND FLEA CONTROL Begin monthly year-round preventive at 8 weeks or older. Nexgard is our first choice; there are other excellent options.
INTESTINAL PARASITES One negative fecal test at 8 weeks or older. Most heartworm preventives also provide protection from intestinal parasites. Occasionally we will deworm at the time of each puppy exam.
RABIES At 12 weeks or older, booster in a year, then once every three years.
DA2PPV (Distemper - Parvo; "puppy shot") At the time of each puppy exam, booster in a year, then once every three years.
KENNEL COUGH At 8 weeks or older, booster in a year, then once per year.
LYME At 12 weeks or older, booster in 2 to 4 weeks, then once per year.
LEPTOSPIROSIS At 12 weeks or older, booster in 2 to 4 weeks, then once per year. However, we often wait until all the other puppy vaccines are done before starting leptospirosis vaccines.
