Bird health is different than all other pets. Their instincts are to mask symptoms in order to hide any signs of weakness that might make them an easier target for predators. Yet, it is early detection of disease and health problems that is so important for good health in animals. Our staff is able to recognize those hidden signs and symptoms, helping you provide the very best care possible for your pet.
Since birds are not nearly as common as some pets, like dogs or cats, bird owners aren’t always sure what avian healthcare should look like. At Yarmouth Veterinary Center, we recommend you schedule a complete physical examination for your bird every 6-12 months. On a yearly basis, we recommend a fecal examination is done for parasites, abnormal bacteria and yeast. We also like to schedule routine blood testing and annual vaccinations for Avian Polyomavirus for those bird types especially susceptible to this disease.
We also do wing, beak and nail trimming for certain avian patients in select cases, though this is not typically recommended.
