Oral health is of primary concern to us, so we take every opportunity to examine our patient's mouths to the fullest extent possible each time we see them.
When we visit the our dentists we sit in the chair and do as we are told. We know why we are there and we have a pretty good idea of what will be done. Our pets do not know why we want to look at or in their mouths and they certainly cannot appreciate our good intentions when we try to stick instruments in there. General anesthesia is necessary for a complete oral exam on a dog or cat.
Our basic diagnostic methods in veterinary dentistry are the awake exam, the anesthetized exam, and dental x-rays.
