Cat Care at Yarmouth Vet Center

Cat owners (or people owned by cats) who live in or near Yarmouth, Maine, are fortunate to have quality veterinarian care provided at our animal hospital, the Yarmouth Veterinary Center (YVC). The quaint Maine town, part of which borders on Casco Bay as a coastal community, is home to our full-service veterinary care of small pets. In addition to veterinarian care for cats, we also provide care and various services for birds, dogs, amphibians and reptiles, as well as ferrets and rabbits.
Yarmouth Veterinary Center had humble beginnings back in 1986 on a house-call basis, as the home of Yarmouth veterinarians Louise LeBouef and Peter Smith served double duty to its human residents who provided simple pet care that eventually included pet grooming and pet boarding in a converted shed. It wasn't until 2000 that the animal hospital built on the former grooming/boarding site became a version of its present-day entity with the design and equipment to provide quality professional veterinarian care.
Common Cat Health Needs and What YVC
Offers for Veterinarian Cat Care
If you live near YVC - or in any of the surrounding towns of Brunswick, Cumberland, Falmouth, Freeport, or Portland - you will find our animal hospital is perfectly suited to provide the kind of care your cat or other small pet requires. In addition to Louse LeBouef and Peter Smith, we have three other fully qualified veterinarians on staff: Becka Samson, Carol Mauriello, and Tom Hart.
While many small pets share similar health needs, each breed has its own particular needs as well. For instance, cats especially may develop problems with hairballs, due to their frequent self-grooming. While an occasional hairball is common, frequent hairballs and regurgitation may require preventive or emergency care.
Additionally, since cats are one of the most common pets to use litter boxes for elimination needs, it is vitally important for owners to regularly scoop waste from litter boxes, and completely change litter at least once a week - perhaps more often, depending on the number of cats using the litter box. A clean litter box helps to not only prevent illness occurring in the cat, but also ensures the cat will continue to use the litter box and not some place else in your home for its elimination duties!
A couple of other common problems that occur in cats are worm infestation and hyperthyroidism. A cat can develop tapeworms, hookworms, or round worms primarily due to ingesting fleas. This first addresses the need to control or eliminate fleas with products developed for that purpose. Once a cat has a worm problem, however, the cat needs deworming medication. Worms are dangerous, as they impair a cat's digestive system and weaken the cat's immune system.
Cats who develop hyperthyroidism often become hyperactive, potentially irritable, increased appetite in spite of losing weight, and increased thirst with accompanying increase in urination. This condition also requires medication or other procedure to treat the problem.
Our animal hospital offers the following services for cats:
• Cat medicines: This includes prescription drugs, as well as flea and tick control, heartworm, and internal parasite treatments.
• Cat preventive care, such as to treat for hairballs; immunizations, including rabies.
• Cat comprehensive care if your cat is injured or ill.
• Cat surgery, including spays and neuters, elective and non-elective procedures.
• Cat dental care, including cleanings, evaluations, digital dental xrays, home dental care programs, and oral surgery (extractions and oral tumor removals).
• Cat boarding.
• Cat grooming.
