Yarmouth Veterinary Clinic - Dog Care

Yarmouth Veterinary Clinic (YVC) is a full service animal hospital serving the nearby communities of Portland, Brunswick, Falmouth, Freeport and Cumberland. Our Animal hospital was founded in 1986, and we have been committed to excellent veterinary care ever since.
We are experienced in dog care, and if you are a first time dog owner, we can work with you and counsel you on how to best care for your pet. Because of our deep commitment to dog care, your first pet exam is free, and we offer a 50% discount for neuter services for clients who have adopted a dog from the humane society or other rescue organization. If this is your first dog, we will counsel you through puppy care, how to house train your dog, and we even offer training classes for your new puppy. If you have an older dog, we realize that these often need special attention, and will work with you to teach you how to best care for your dog. At YVC, we are knowledgeable in the care of all dogs, from puppies through to aging and elderly dogs.
Dog Care Tips from our Yarmouth Veterinarian
Dogs can make a great addition to your family, but they do require attention and loving care like any other family member. Dogs should be walked and exercised regularly. Regular exercise, combined with stimulating and safe toys, will eliminate most destructive behaviors and keep your dog happy. Puppies, adult, and senior dogs all have different dietary needs and one of our staff members can help you determine the appropriate diet for your dog.
Dogs have a tendency to beg for table scraps, but we recommend against feeding dogs anything other than dog-specific food or treats. There are many different types of people food that are poisonous to dogs such as: chocolate, coffee, grapes, onions, raisins, avocados, and various types of nuts. By refraining from giving your dog people-food, you are ensuring they do not eat anything toxic and helping them maintain a healthy weight.
Vaccinations are a necessary part of a dog’s life, especially at the beginning. Just like humans, dogs are prone to certain diseases that vaccinations have been developed to deter. The vaccination schedule that your dog should follow will depend on the size and breed of the animal, and our staff will work with you to determine the best one for your dog. Common vaccines include distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, and parainfluenza. Our animal hospital can also help with other preventative medications, such as heartworm, flea, and tick treatments.
Our veterinarians recommend that your dog get a check up once a year. This will include any further vaccinations that your pet is scheduled for, and we also recommend a professional teeth cleaning at this time. Periodontal disease is a common issue for most dogs, and regular check-ups and teeth cleanings can help prevent this and other issues. In addition to regular dental cleanings, we recommend grooming and bathing your dog regularly. If you are unable to bath your dog at home, you are welcome to schedule a pet grooming appointment with us.
Our animal hospital offers the following services for dogs:
• Dog medicines: This includes prescription drugs, as well as flea and tick control, heartworm, and internal parasite treatments.
• Dog preventive care, such as grooming, teeth cleanings, and immunizations, including rabies.
• Dog comprehensive care if your cat is injured or ill.
• Dog surgery, including spays and neuters, elective and non-elective procedures.
• Dog dental care, including cleanings, evaluations, digital dental xrays, home dental care programs, and oral surgery (extractions and oral tumor removals).
• Dog boarding.
• Dog grooming.
Whether you are visiting the Yarmouth Veterinary Clinic for a routine teeth cleaning, an annual check-up, pet boarding, a more serious procedure or to take advantage of our pet grooming services, we want you and your dog to have a pleasant and positive experience with us.
