Yarmouth Veterinary Center located in Yarmouth, ME is the small animal hospital of choice for the communities of Portland, Brunswick, Falmouth, Freeport and Cumberland. Our veterinarians and staff provide comprehensive medical care and treatment for all types of pets, including small animals and exotic pets. We provide veterinary care not only for dogs and cats but also for unique small animals such as ferrets, rabbits, pocket-sized pets, birds and reptiles. We also offer small animal pet boarding and grooming here at our animal hospital.
Ferrets and rabbits both have unique veterinary needs. For example, ferrets commonly suffer from adrenal gland disease and pancreatic tumors. These problems can be difficult to
diagnose, but are potentially treatable, especially if detected early. Ferrets are also somewhat prone to eating things they should not and can develop an intestinal obstruction. Timely diagnosis and surgery can save their lives. Discuss any changes in your ferrets behavior with our veterinarian.
Rabbits and ferrets also have very specific housing needs, but both can be litter-box trained. We encourage small animal pet owners to discuss the necessary housing needs with one of our veterinarians to ensure a safe, comfortable, and engaging environment for the pet. The main cause of rabbits being turned over to shelters is for destructive behavior, which can be easily avoided by providing the proper toys. By instinct, rabbits chew and dig and by giving them simple stimulating toys like cardboard boxes and chew sticks, you can satisfy their needs and keep your home intact.
In addition, rabbits, ferrets and other small mammals will need to have their nails clipped. In the wild these nails are constantly worn down from use but domesticated pets must have this done for them. Our pet grooming services here at the animal hospital include a nail trim and a skin check. For a ful
l list of our pet grooming services, please contact our center. The social requirements of rabbits, ferrets and small pocket pets such as hamsters and rats is another important aspect of their care to discuss with one of our Yarmouth veterinarians.
Birds and reptiles require specialized veterinary care and artificial environments in the areas of Portland, Brunswick, Freeport, Falmouth, and Cumberland. Most brightly colored birds and reptiles are indigenous to tropical or sub-tropical regions. While we love the weather here in Maine, it is not tropical! Furthermore, each species of pet bird and reptile will have specific medical, dietary and habitat requirements. Our veterinarian can help you to create optimum living arrangements for your bird or reptile ensuring that they live a long and healthy life. Large pet birds and large reptiles also have very particular social requirements and this is one reason our veterinarians are available for house calls. We also can provide pet boarding for these exotic pets.
Education about the care and health of small animal pets is our priority here at our animal hospital. We are always available to answer your questions and can be reached at 207-482-0493.
